Rewards

Strategy

At Leigh Academy Strood, rewarding and praising students is at the centre of everything we do. Our strategy allows for every student to be rewarded in the academy each year and for all students to feel a part of the community, that they belong, feel valued and have their success acknowledged.

Line Up Rewards

Each week top performing and most improved students are celebrated with badges, certificates, privilege cards and sweets. High attendance figures, high numbers of reward points and winning form groups are read out and celebrated. Names of the Principal and Head of College’s nominations from the Rewards Bulletin (see below) are read out and given a £5 Amazon voucher, along with sweets given to the ‘student of the week’ in each form group. This positive start to every morning provides the students a consistent routine, praise and encouragement, motivation, a sense of unity and purpose in our community and the feeling of value to their achievements.

Assemblies

Assemblies take place every week in colleges and reward assemblies take place at the end of every module. Students are recognised for their achievements in and outside of school, reward points gained, attendance success, but also students are nominated by teachers for their academic achievements in lessons. Reward assemblies at Leigh Academy Strood are formal, highly anticipated events where we reward as many students as possible across each college.

Rewards in lessons

Reward points are given out every lesson for a student’s performance and work ethic in lessons. Students can be given reward points for demonstrating the IB learner profile attributes such as ‘thinker’, ‘risk taker’, ‘balanced’ etc through their class work or contributions to the lesson. Students can also be given reward points for ‘outstanding presentation of work’, ‘consistently meeting expectations’ and for showing our key values such as respect and kindness.

Rewards Bulletin

Each week we publish a Rewards bulletin. The bulletin identifies students in each of our 4 colleges who have been awarded the most reward points, as well as students nominated by college leaders to receive a £5 Amazon voucher each week for outstanding contributions to the academy. Attendance rewards

Each module there is an attendance reward in place to motivate students to come to school every day and take responsibility for their own attendance. Students are incredibly positive about these rewards and they love to receive them! These rewards create positive conversations around attendance with form tutors, parents and students, supporting our strive for 97% attendance and above! Staff rewards

Whilst we recognise the importance of rewarding the students, we also see the value in rewarding our staff. Staff are given shout outs by the Principal each week in staff briefing and win a coffee voucher to be used in the restaurant. They can be nominated by students, colleagues and parents for their contribution to academy life and to our community. Staff are also given incentives for logging positive reward points or having high attendance in each college and are given other modularly/weekly rewards such as biscuits, doughnuts and Easter eggs! We have found feedback from staff to show that they enjoy the small boosts in motivation at crucial times in the academic year.

Rewards Celebration Evening

The pinnacle of the year in terms of rewards is our highly prestigious Rewards Celebration Evening. This event takes place at the end of module 6 and students are invited based on the highest level of achievement and excellence across the academy. 1 student is nominated per subject, per key stage for subject awards. 1 student is nominated per college for ‘outstanding contribution’, ‘most improved’ and for the IB learner profiles. The evening also includes staff awards and performances for our incredibly talented students. This event leads to around 150 students and their families coming together to celebrate and reflect on an amazing year.
