Dear Parents/Carers
As your child approaches their GCSE years, choosing the right subjects is a pivotal step toward their future career and academic success. I am writing to outline the significant benefits of studying Triple Science (also known as Separate Sciences: Biology, Chemistry, and Physics) through the AQA exam board.
While the “Combined Science” route is a fantastic foundation, the Triple Science pathway offers a deeper, more specialised dive into the wonders of the natural world.
In Triple Science, students study the same core content as Combined Science but explore additional topics that provide a more complete picture of each discipline.
- Biology: Covers extra content on the brain, the eye, and monoclonal antibodies.
- Chemistry: Explores transition metals, nanoparticles, and bulk properties of matter.
- Physics: Includes the popular Space Physics module, exploring the life cycle of stars and the expanding universe.
If your child is considering studying Biology, Chemistry, or Physics at A-Level and beyond, Triple Science is ideally placed to set them up for success in their chosen field. Because it covers more complex concepts, students often find the “jump” from GCSE to A-Level much more manageable. It builds the analytical rigour and mathematical fluency required for advanced scientific study.
Students who study Combined Science, will receive two GCSE grades (e.g., 7-7)at the end of the course. Triple Science results in three separate GCSEs in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. This allows students to showcase their individual strengths in each subject. A student who excels in Physics but finds Biology more challenging will have that reflected clearly in their distinct grades.
Science is a “facilitating subject.” Achieving three separate science GCSEs is looked upon very favourably by top universities and employers. It opens doors not only to traditional medical and engineering roles but also to careers in:
- Data Science and AI
- Environmental Law and Policy
- Architecture and Forensic Science
- Sports Science and Nutrition
Beyond the laboratory, Triple Science fosters a “scientific mindset.” Students learn how to peer-review evidence, evaluate the validity of data, and think critically about global issues like climate change and medical ethics. These are skills that are invaluable in any professional field.
Is Triple Science Right for My Child?
Triple Science is an academically demanding route that requires a genuine interest in the subject and a consistent work ethic. It involves more lesson time and three sets of exams, but for a student who is curious about how the world works, it is an incredibly rewarding experience.
We are committed to supporting every student in finding the pathway that allows them to shine. If you have any questions regarding the curriculum or the assessment structure, please do not hesitate to contact me sarah.macgregor@strood.latrust.org.uk
